The best years: no problems, no homework, new friends.

I don’t remember so perfectly what happened that day, but in this blog entry I will talk about the first day I entered kindergarten. “Los Fresnos” is the name of the school, is a very funny name and I have no idea what it means, but I like it.  I was a cold morning of January, the cold of December was still in the weather, and we were waiting for the spring to come. The first day I entered with my cousin, Marian, she is only a one month and one day older than me, so we have been living all our lives together. When she dropped her first tooth, mine fell too, we got chickenpox at the same time and a lot more. She is like my twin sister, I love her so much.

We entered the school the same day, I remember she was crying and I was happy to start a new step of my life. She grabbed from my arm and she didn’t want to move, it was annoying, but she is my cousin I had to be good with her.  The day was gloomy, and the trees were shaking, there was a lot of wind that day. I woke up at 6 a.m. to go to school; I put on my red sweater and my Elmo jeans and grabbed my Sesame Street bag. I was ready to start a new adventure. I was like three years old, so I thought that was going to be a great adventure.

When we entered, a lot of kids were jumping and playing in the wooden jungle and other child games. I was so excited, but Marian was scared and sad. We ran and played with the other kids until it was time to enter the classroom. Marian and I got separated, as always, she had to be in one classroom and I had to be in another classroom. I was scared because I knew no one, I had no friends and I almost never speak. I was always alone, but one day a short kid talked to me, he said: “My name is Jesus and I think you have a big head”, I don’t know why but I can still remember this exact moment. That day I made a friend, which twelve years later, he would continue being one of my best friends.

One day, we had a physic education competition, the competition was: the first to run to the top of the hill and down, will be the winner. I haven’t been this lazy my whole life, I was the fastest of all. When we heard the “BEEEP” of the whistle, we ran like if a giant cockroach was behind us. I was winning, but when I was about to win, a rock got into my way and I fell. I opened a little hole in my face, it was painful, but it was more painful to see that I had lost the competition. Jesus ran and tried to help me, but he was too weak to lift me. Carmen, our teacher, helped me and washed my face, but I was still bleeding and crying. Twelve years later I still laugh about what happened but I have my scar on the face.

The school year continued and I made more and more friends and I met my first “girlfriend” in there. It was a great year, no problems, no homework, more friends, what else could I ask for?

The school is just a few block away from my house, last November I went back to see how it was and I almost cried, I was so nostalgic. I saw my old friends, and the school was the same. Jesus moved to my condominium and we still talk, Carmen became the headmistress and a lot of things like that changed, but the place is the same. I found out that a lot, A LOT of my old friends studied in there and now some are in my actual school.
